We congratulate Son of Lourdes and former International Criminal Court – ICC judge Raul Pangalangan on his election as a Membre Associé (Associate Member) of the Institut de Droit international – Institute of International Law. According to the University of the Philippines College of Law website article, Judge Pangalangan made this statement upon learning of his election: “This is the most highly coveted recognition in the field of international law, and I am awed to sit at the same table with its most accomplished scholars and practitioners. At a time when it seems fashionable to be anti-foreign and anti-global, I hope our countrymen will see International Law as a venue to advance our interests in solidarity with other like-minded nations.”
Only recently retired from the ICC after serving as judge from 2015-2021, he had been Dean of the University of the Philippines College of Law from 1999-2005.
He holds the Diplôme of The Hague Academy of International Law and received both his LLM (Master of Laws) and SJD (Doctors of Laws) from Harvard University. He is the only other Filipino who has sat in the IDI since the late Philippine Supreme Court Justice Florentino Feliciano.
We salute his many achievements and his perseverance as a man of character and excellence. His exemplary and estimable commitment to justice and peace is a singular inspiration to the young and a font of pride to the nation. Pax et bonum!
